All that changed when Julia discovered she was pregnant. Children had never really been part of her life plan and she was unwilling to give up her career for her family. Pregnancy was hard on her and things didn't get any easier after Liesel was born, with Julia suffering from postpartum depression. Ben took over as primary caregiver of his infant daughter, and when Julia was well enough to go back to work it seemed logical that Ben would be the one to stay home and raise Liesel. The arrangement was only expected to last until Liesel was old enough to go to school, however two more daughters followed and Ben spent the next several years taking care of his girls.
Although Julia loved her daughters she was always a little distant with them and the girls grew closer to their father as a result. Not knowing what else he could share with them, Ben taught them all music from an early age, starting out with nursery rhymes and makeshift drums before moving onto guitar when they were older. By the time Liesel was in high school all three of them were writing their own songs, although none of them considered they were good enough to play music professionally. It was at this point that Liesel began what she would later refer to as her "wild child" phase. Always the responsible big sister, she began to feel the need to break free from her family and fell in with an older crowd, sometimes staying out for days at a time. She had previously been a good student, but began cutting classes in her junior year of high school, eventually choosing to drop out altogether. A fight with her parents ensued and Liesel moved out to live with her friends, cutting off all contact with her family. Six months later her best friend overdosed and died in front of her, changing life forever as she knew it. Until that point Liesel had convinced herself that what she was doing was harmless and her friend’s death was the wake-up call she needed.
Her family welcomed her back with open arms and she immediately set about trying to rebuild the life she'd all but thrown away, repeating high school and forming a band with other - less wild - friends. Calling themselves Green Square they didn't honestly expect their music to go anywhere. Perhaps it wouldn't have, but one of Liesel's bandmates was determined and under her guidance they released three independent EPs, which eventually led to them getting signed. As time went on, Liesel began to feel frustrated and creatively stifled by the band, a feeling that only intensified as they moved into more of a 60's sound. In retaliation, she formed another band, Calligraphy, with several friends. What originally began as a way to blow off steam became a fully-fledged band, resulting in the release of their debut album in 2012.
With her music career constantly ebbing and flowing, Liesel began to focus on writing in a different form, penning a number of short stories, eventually resulting in a book deal (largely with the help of a few well-placed friends). With her debut novel due for release in 2015 and a new album recorded with Calligraphy, she still has no signs of slowing down, happiest when she has something to focus her attention on.
